When you lived at home with your family before going off to college, it is fair to say that you were not in charge of the home’s décor. One of the lovely things about going off to college is you get to express yourself through decorating, from your dorm to your off-campus apartment.

The only thing is that you begin to realize that home decoration is expensive. It can also be a lot more difficult to do than you expected. Who knew it could be so difficult to match a shade? Or that matching a shade was important. I mean, black is black, right? Not right.

As college students on a budget, decorating can actually be really difficult. However, you want your living space to feel like it is lived in and like it is your own. So read on to learn some ways to make your apartment homier!

Photos

A quick and easy way to bring your home, your family, and your friends into your college apartment is to actually bring them into your homes. But wait — how? By using photos of them of course (it is not realistic to expect all your family and friends to hang out at your apartment all the time just to make it feel homier)!

Each photo generally only costs a few cents to have printed, though of course the more you print the cheaper it will be. Just price out your best options and look for coupons to have your photos printed for the best deals. Having reminders of your family and friends can be comforting and make your apartment feel more like home.

They do not need to be professional studio shots by any means. Choose the photos that are your favorite and the most meaningful to you. These pictures are not up for other people to look at (necessarily), they are up for you to enjoy and to help you further enjoy your home.

Have a favorite photo of you and your siblings making silly faces at a holiday gathering? Have a photo of yourself as a child having an absolute blast with your parents? Those are the kinds of photos that are telling about you and that are good memories you will want to relive over and over again.

Throw Pillows/Blankets

Oftentimes, your apartment comes furnished and so you cannot choose what furniture your apartment has. Or, because you are on a college budget, you cannot pick the furniture that you would like. Or you can only afford a few pieces, none of which match. How do you make your orange ’70s couch match your black IKEA coffee table match your ’90s light wood kitchen dining table and chairs?

It can be hard to make all the different elements of your house mesh and feel cozy. A great way around that is by using throw pillows and blankets! You can go out and buy them or they are often simple enough that you can make them yourself.

Add pops of color, showcase your school spirit, display your love for all things cat related and have pillows and blankets that make your space more comfortable to live in.

Art

Another great way to make your apartment homier is by decorating it with your favorite kind of art! This could be art that you buy or art that you make yourself. You are looking for the kind of art that you can keep looking at and still discover new things about it or that you keep finding new meaning in or that simply satisfies you just by looking at it. In those cases, it does not matter where the art comes from.

You may be saying, whoa there, slow down! Art is expensive. And yes, it can be. If you want to save up to buy a piece of art from your favorite artist or one of the local artists around town that you admire, you can do that! Sometimes meaningful art that speaks to you is worth the money.

You can also find cheaper options by finding reproduced art and prints at big name locations as well. Framing can be very expensive so it is often best to find something that comes with a frame, has a frame that you like, or does not require one.

You can also make art yourself! If you enjoy creating things then this is a good idea for you. Investing money in the supplies can be daunting, so either stick with what you need or take the full plunge and invest in supplies that you plan to use over and over again. You can make splatter paintings, sketch a portrait, glue a collage. Make the art you would buy but can’t seem to find. Make the statement that you want to. Then put it up on your walls and be proud.
